WHITECHAPEL NOISE at Jewish Community Centre London

Join Vivi Lachs, three bands and special guests for a musical celebration of the publication of her book Whitechapel Noise: Jewish Immigrant Life in Yiddish Song and Verse, London 1884–1914. Telling histories gleaned from London’s Yiddish music-hall lyrics, satirical and socialist verse, this entertaining evening brings the book to life showing a new analysis of our Yiddish immigrant culture. Vivi Lachs is a folk singer and historian of the Yiddish East End. She sings with the bands Klezmer Klub and Katsha’nes specialising in Yiddish songs of London.

Klezmer Klub specialise in locally composed klezmer and songs of the Yiddish East End. This longstanding local band play at simchas and folk clubs, festivals and parties. They have two CDs including the highly acclaimed Whitechapel, mayn vaytshepl (2009) www.klezmerklub.co.uk

Katsha’nes have recently received a four-star rating in Songlines for their debut CD Don’t Ask Silly Questions. They perform the hits from the Cockney-Yiddish music hall of the turn of the Twentieth Century in costume and drama. www.katshanes.com

The Great Yiddish Parade is a chorus and marching band, bringing songs composed by Morris Winchevsky for union action in the East End back to the streets of London.
