Wayne State University Press Presents: Whitechapel Noise at the Detroit Jewish Book Fair 2019

The JCC of Metro Detroit’s annual Jewish Book Fair exposes our community and the community at large to prominent and energizing authors from all over the world. We invite you to join us as we engage, educate and entertain you with this year’s incredible lineup.

Whitechapel Noise presents the untold story of the cultural life of London’s Yiddish East End. Lachs positions Jewish immigrant popular culture in historical perspective within Anglo-Jewish history, English socialist aesthetics, and music-hall ways and shows its relationship to the international Yiddish-speaking world. Lachs’ study offers a new reading of Anglo-Jewish, London, and immigrant history.

Vivi Lachs is a social and cultural historian, Yiddishist, and associate research fellow at Birkbeck, University of London. She is the author of Making Multimedia in the Classroom and has written articles on education and Jewish history. She performs and composes music to London Yiddish lyrics.
