JTours: Celebrating 100 Years of the Detroit Public Library with Author Barbara Cohn

Celebrating 100 years on Woodward, the Detroit Public Library has ranked as one of the most beautiful buildings in Detroit—an important landmark as well as a significant monument serving generations of Detroit’s community. Author Barbara Cohn will discuss the conception and highlight the art and architecture of the 1921 Main Library Building, the 1963 Cass Avenue addition, and the library today. She will also include Jewish connections to the library including artists and library commissioners. This lecture unites the interests of history buffs, art enthusiasts, library lovers, and Detroit-area locals with a tribute to one of the city’s most impressive structures.

Barbara Madgy Cohn is active in the Detroit art and historic community including her role as a docent at the Detroit Institute of Arts, creating an art & architecture tour of the Detroit Public Library, and providing community lectures. She is currently finishing a Masters in Museum Studies at Johns Hopkins University. In addition to journal publications on Detroit Jewish History, she is the co-author of The Detroit Public Library: An American Classic. Presently, she serves as the vice president of the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan, on the board of directors for the Albert Kahn Legacy Foundation, American Technion Society-Michigan Chapter, and on the Dimensions Advisory Board of the Jewish Hospice & Chaplaincy Network.
