The poetry and passion of the ideas make the plays relate to all of us.

— Tanure Ojade

This anthology of plays by Tess Onwueme, one of the bright new literary artists in contemporary drama, allows a glimpse into the lives of the people of Onwueme’s native Nigeria and reveals the range and beauty of Nigerian culture. At the same time, Three Plays sheds light on the reality of the human condition and the conflicts that arise between the individual and society.

Tess Akaeke Onwueme is an award-winning author and playwright whose works include Go Tell it to Women, Legacies and The Desert Encrouaches. An associate professor in the Department of English at Vassar College, she received her Ph.D. from the University of Benin in Nigeria.

Tess Onwueme easily stands out as the most prolific and outstanding female dramatist of the new generation of African writers. Her characters, who are simultaneously deeply rooted in humanity, nature, and African culture, exude confidence in their roles in society. Onwueme's strong and purposeful women belie the often peddled view that African women are weak and submissive. The poetry and passion of the ideas make the plays relate to all of us.
